🕊️ Bahá'í Temple in Santiago: our experience in one of the most beautiful places in Chile and a reflection on accessibility.

During our trip to Santiago, Chile, we had the opportunity to visit one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in the city: the Bahá'í Temple of South America. With its impressive architecture, beautifully maintained gardens, and peaceful atmosphere, the place offers an experience unlike anything we had seen before.

Beyond the beauty, the visit also made us reflect on a very important topic for us here at Autistando pelo Mundo: accessibility and inclusion.

In this article, we share our experience, explain how the visit works, and tell you what we found (and also what we missed) in terms of accessibility.

📍 Where is the Bahá'í Temple located in Santiago?

The Bahá'í Temple is located in Peñalolén, in a higher area of the city of Santiago, at the foot of the Andes Mountains.

Access is easy for those arriving by car, and both entry and parking are free.

The view from the place alone makes the visit worthwhile.

🌎 One of the few continental temples in the world

The Santiago temple represents all of South America and was inaugurated in 2016, after many years of planning and construction.

For a long time, the Bahá'í Faith maintained only a few large continental temples around the world, located in North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania, and Central America.

Its design is unique. The structure has nine sides and was built with fused glass and translucent marble, allowing natural light to pass through its walls and create different shades throughout the day.

Even for those who do not belong to the Bahá'í Faith, it is impossible not to admire its architecture.

⛺ How does the visit work?

Upon arrival, visitors are gathered into small groups in tents near the entrance.

There, those in charge give a brief presentation about:

  • 📖 The history of the temple;
  • 🏗️ How it was built;
  • 🌎 Its importance to South America;
  • ☮️ Some principles of the Bahá'í Faith;
  • 🤝 A proposal for unity among peoples and religions.

The entire presentation was given in Spanish.

After this introduction, visitors are free to stroll through the gardens and explore the temple.

✨ One of the most beautiful places in Santiago

If we had to choose the most beautiful places we visited in Santiago, the Bahá'í Temple would certainly be among them.

The gardens are extremely well maintained, the view of the Andes Mountains is beautiful, and the architecture is truly impressive.

It's an environment that conveys peace and invites people to slow down.

🔇 Silence is part of the experience.

One of the guidelines given to visitors is precisely to maintain silence.

The goal is to provide a pleasant and contemplative environment for everyone.

Inside the temple, there are no ceremonies during regular visits, and the atmosphere is extremely peaceful.

It was one of the things we enjoyed the most.

For many autistic people, quieter environments can be quite pleasant.

♿ Our experience regarding accessibility

Despite the beauty of the place, unfortunately we missed several accessibility features.

To reach the main temple, it is necessary to climb several flights of stairs.

During our visit, we noticed that there is a handrail on only one side, which may not be sufficient for some people.

We also did not identify tactile paving, tactile maps, audio description resources, or accessible materials for people with visual impairments.

In fact, during the descent, Aurora ended up tripping and falling on one of the stairs, even tearing her pants. Fortunately, it wasn't anything serious, but it was something that caught our attention and made us think even more about safety and accessibility.

  • ⚠️ Many steps to reach the temple;
  • ⚠️ Handrail on only one side;
  • ❌ Tactile paving;
  • ❌ Tactile maps;
  • ❌ Audio description;
  • ❌ Specific resources for visual impairment.

🧩 And what about autistic people?

From a sensory point of view, the environment is very pleasant.

There is no loud music, excessive stimulation, or intense movement.

On the other hand, we did not identify specific resources aimed at including autistic people, such as visual materials, adapted signage, or more accessible information.

Accessibility goes beyond the physical environment. It also involves communication, predictability, and inclusion.

💙 Our rating

We really enjoyed the experience.

The Bahá'í Temple is a beautiful, free place that differs from other traditional tourist attractions in Santiago.

At the same time, we believe there is considerable room for improvement in accessibility and inclusion.

Accessible tourism is about enabling more people to live incredible experiences with autonomy, safety, and comfort.

⭐ Is it worth a visit?

Yes, it's definitely worth it.

If you are in Santiago and looking for a peaceful, beautiful, and free outing, the Bahá'í Temple is an excellent option.

However, it's worth remembering that people with reduced mobility or visual impairments may encounter limitations due to a lack of accessibility resources.
